Venturing into uncharted music territory

Discovery of the week: Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams

Despite devoting a ridiculous amount of time to attempting to keep up with the world of music, hardly a week passes without my "discovering" an utterly fantastic group or artist that previously had avoided my grasp.

By JIM MUSSER
[Music Beat]

The most recent such treasure came to my door courtesy of Pete and Maura Kennedy (The Kennedys).
The group sports the unlikely moniker of Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus Of Dreams; their second release, "Flapjacks From The Sky," is a two-disc tour-de-force that swings far and wide across genre barriers to provide 21 slices (and almost 105 minutes) of jaw-dropping bliss.

Based in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., GM & The SCOD is a quartet led by one Joziah Longo (vocals, all songwriting, guitars, bass, harmonica and jaw harp) and rounded out by Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, piccolo and vocals), Sharkey McEwen (lead guitars, bass, mandolin, keyboards and vocals) and Tony Zuzulo (drums, percussion).

Longo's wheezy drawl clearly favors Tom Petty, but the band's sound is so thoroughly un-hinged that convincing elements of The Band, Dylan, Fairport Convention, Traffic, Pink Floyd (on the epic "Talkin' To The Buddha"), The Byrds, The Grateful Dead and assorted psychedelic purveyors come and go in a dizzying, shape-shifting swirl.

Infused with magic, mythology and pan-theistic spirituality, the set brims with hope, goodwill and unsinkable optimism - rare (perhaps even delusional) qualities in these troubled days.
